ASPIRETV TO PREMIERE POWERFUL SHORT FILM ‘HIStory’ JULY 4
ATLANTA – June 23, 2021 – AspireTV, the network that celebrates and reflects Black culture and urban lifestyle, announced today that HIStory, the next short film in its partnership with Damn Write Originals, is set to premiere on Sunday, July 4 at 8 p.m. ET with an encore at 8:30 p.m. ET.
HIStory, written by Tim Orange II, is a story about a Black father, Justin Black (played by Rodney Perry), who is called into his son’s predominately Black and Latin middle school to discuss his behavior. Mr. Black finds himself missing his shift at work to debate with his son’s teacher, Ms. Peeple (played by Meggan Kaiser) and Principal, Principal Whyte (played by David Ditmore), about the relevance of the schools eighth-grade History curriculum and what his son, Trent Black (played by Caleb Lowery), is learning.
“As we premiere this powerful film on the day our country celebrates its independence, July 4th, we acknowledge that many Black Americans don’t believe this holiday is for everyone as an important part of Black history is not represented,” said Tina Rodriguez, senior director, programming & acquisitions, AspireTV. “African Americans have been celebrating Juneteenth for 155 years, and our hope is that HIStory reminds viewers of the important story and the importance of sharing this knowledge with future generations.”
In 2020, the world was awakened by tragic killings of George Floyd and other black Americans. The injustice and brutality sparked conversations and incited unity, pride and change in the Black community.
“When I sat down to write the script, I thought it would be interesting to highlight the inadequacies in the public school system”, said Tim Orange II, screenwriter at Damn Write Originals. “I found it odd that the majority of inner-city schools, myself being a product of one, were predominantly occupied by minority students but had little to no lessons centered on the TRUE history of these students. It’s problematic that we have to learn about the greatness that comes along with being Black, aside from civil rights triumphs, outside of the public school system.”
